ChatGPT Statistics 2026: Users, Growth, Revenue & Usage

ChatGPT has grown from an experimental AI chatbot into one of the most widely used consumer technology products in the world. Since its public launch on November 30, 2022, it has changed how people search for information, write content, study, code, conduct research, and complete everyday tasks.

Its growth has also changed the broader artificial intelligence industry. What began as a text-based conversational assistant has developed into a platform supporting image generation, document analysis, voice conversations, research, and increasingly complex workflows.

But how many people actually use ChatGPT in 2026? How quickly has it grown, how much do people use it for work, and what do the latest statistics reveal about its future?

This article brings together ChatGPT statistics from its launch through 2026, using OpenAI's published research, independent studies, and reported company milestones. It distinguishes confirmed historical figures from estimates, and weekly active users from website visits, to provide a clearer picture of ChatGPT's growth.

1. ChatGPT User Growth Statistics From 2022 to 2026

ChatGPT's user growth is one of the most significant developments in consumer AI adoption.

After launching in late 2022, ChatGPT reached one million users in just five days. Within approximately two months, it had reached 100 million users, a milestone that helped establish generative AI as a mainstream technology.

Its growth continued through 2023 and 2024 as OpenAI introduced more capable models and additional product features. By 2025, ChatGPT had become a regular tool for hundreds of millions of people.

How Fast Did ChatGPT Grow?

Between November 2023 and February 2026, reported weekly active users increased from approximately 100 million to 900 million.

That represents a ninefold increase over a little more than two years. It also demonstrates that ChatGPT's growth was not limited to the initial excitement surrounding its launch.

Several developments contributed to broader adoption, including improvements in model capabilities, multimodal features, mobile accessibility, and business-focused products.

However, these developments should not be interpreted as individually proven causes of growth without additional causal research.

2. How Many People Use ChatGPT in 2026?

The latest verified OpenAI announcement located for this article reported more than 900 million weekly active users on February 27, 2026.

In August 2026, OpenAI also described more than one billion people putting ChatGPT to work. However, that statement does not provide a new, directly comparable weekly active user count. It would therefore be inaccurate to report one billion weekly active users as a confirmed October 2026 measurement.

The distinction matters because statistics about registered accounts, weekly users, monthly users, and cumulative reach answer different questions.

How Many People Use ChatGPT Every Day?

OpenAI has published daily message counts, but these should not be confused with daily active users.

One person can send several messages during a single session, while another might use ChatGPT only once during the day. Therefore, dividing the number of daily messages by an assumed number of prompts per user would not produce a reliable daily active user estimate.

For accurate reporting, use the confirmed weekly user milestone and identify daily message volume separately.

3. How Many ChatGPT Messages Are Sent Every Day?

In July 2025, OpenAI reported that users were sending more than 2.5 billion messages per day worldwide, including more than 330 million daily messages in the United States.

That means the reported global volume was equivalent to approximately 28,900 messages per second, using 2.5 billion as the calculation baseline.

Chart

Both figures are lower-bound reports. The United States is included within the global total, not an additional volume.

The message volume demonstrates how frequently people interact with ChatGPT. It also highlights why usage statistics based only on website visits can underestimate activity across mobile apps and other product interfaces.

4. ChatGPT Revenue Statistics From 2023 to 2026

ChatGPT's rapid adoption has contributed to OpenAI's commercial growth. However, OpenAI's company-wide revenue should not be presented as revenue generated exclusively by ChatGPT subscriptions.

OpenAI earns revenue from several activities, including consumer subscriptions, business products, and API services.

In March 2026, OpenAI reported that it had reached approximately $1 billion in revenue within a year of launching ChatGPT. By the end of 2024, the company was generating about $1 billion per quarter.

The same March 2026 announcement stated that OpenAI was generating approximately $2 billion in revenue per month, equivalent to a $24 billion annualized run rate if that monthly pace were sustained. This is not the same as reporting $24 billion in realized annual revenue.

5. How Many Paid ChatGPT Subscribers Are There?

OpenAI announced more than 50 million consumer subscribers in February 2026. It also reported more than nine million paying business users.

These are different populations and should not be added together without confirming how the company defines and counts each category.

The 50 million consumer subscriber figure is especially significant because ChatGPT also has a widely accessible free offering. It demonstrates that a substantial number of users are willing to pay for additional AI capabilities.

OpenAI did not provide a complete public breakdown of those 50 million subscriptions by plan in the announcement.

6. ChatGPT Usage Statistics: What Do People Use It For?

ChatGPT is used for much more than writing essays or generating code.

A September 2025 study by OpenAI's Economic Research team and Harvard economist David Deming analyzed approximately 1.5 million conversations using privacy-preserving methods.

The research found that practical guidance, information seeking, and writing collectively accounted for around three-quarters of consumer conversations.

49% of Messages Involved Asking Questions

Almost half of classified consumer messages involved users seeking information, explanations, or advice.

This includes asking for help understanding concepts, comparing options, researching topics, and exploring decisions. It shows that ChatGPT serves an information and guidance role alongside its content-generation capabilities.

40% of Messages Involved Completing Tasks

Around 40% of messages were classified as doing, meaning users wanted ChatGPT to produce an output or perform a task.

Examples include drafting documents, preparing plans, generating code, editing content, and organizing information. These activities help explain why ChatGPT has become useful across education, business, and professional workflows.

11% of Messages Involved Expressing

The remaining 11% involved expression, such as sharing experiences, reflecting on situations, or participating in open-ended conversation without a clear request for information or task completion.

This category illustrates that not all ChatGPT usage is directly connected to measurable productivity.

The finding is important because it challenges the assumption that ChatGPT is primarily a workplace tool.

People also use it for studying, understanding information, organizing personal activities, writing messages, exploring hobbies, and making everyday decisions.

The proportion should not be generalized to all OpenAI products. The research focused on consumer ChatGPT usage and excluded dedicated enterprise and API activity.

8. ChatGPT Demographics Statistics in 2026

ChatGPT's user base has become more diverse as adoption has expanded beyond early technology enthusiasts.

Independent surveys show substantial differences in usage by age and education. However, demographic statistics based on surveys of U.S. adults should not be presented as worldwide ChatGPT demographics.

ChatGPT Usage by Age in the United States

According to Pew Research Center's February 2026 survey, 44% of U.S. adults reported having used ChatGPT.

Among adults aged 18 to 29, the figure was 61%. Usage was also substantial among adults aged 30 to 49, at 55%.

ChatGPT Adoption Among U.S. Adults From 2023 to 2026

Chart

Pew's figures indicate that the share of U.S. adults reporting ChatGPT use increased from 18% in 2023 to 44% in 2026.

That is an increase of 26 percentage points. The 2026 survey used updated question wording, so comparisons should be treated as an indication of the overall adoption trend rather than a perfectly identical survey measure across every year.

9. ChatGPT Gender Statistics

OpenAI's 2025 research found that ChatGPT's early gender-related adoption gap had narrowed substantially.

In January 2024, 37% of users whose names could be classified as typically feminine or masculine had typically feminine names. By July 2025, the share had increased to approximately 52%.

This does not establish the actual gender identity of users. OpenAI's analysis relied on name-based inference, and people whose names could not be classified were excluded from that measure.

In its June 2026 adoption research, OpenAI reported that users with typically feminine names accounted for more than half of users in the classifiable sample.

10. ChatGPT Statistics by Country and Region

ChatGPT adoption has spread well beyond its earliest markets.

OpenAI's June 2026 research found that relative growth since July 2023 had been especially strong in Africa and Asia. It also reported faster relative adoption growth in countries with lower Human Development Index scores.

The findings suggest that ChatGPT's global expansion is not limited to high-income economies.

However, growth rates should not be confused with total user counts. A region with a smaller starting user base can have faster percentage growth without having the largest number of users.

Which Countries Use ChatGPT the Most?

There is no single official public table in the sources reviewed that provides a complete, up-to-date ranking of unique ChatGPT users for every country.

OpenAI's Signals dataset provides country-level measures, including messages per capita and relative adoption. These measures are useful, but they do not necessarily indicate which country has the highest total number of ChatGPT users.

For example, OpenAI's Q1 2026 analysis identified Japan, Mexico, Brazil, and several other countries as gaining positions in its per-capita message rankings. This represents movement in usage intensity, not a ranking of total accounts.

11. ChatGPT Language Usage Statistics

English remains an important language for ChatGPT, but non-English usage has expanded considerably.

OpenAI reported in June 2026 that people predominantly using languages other than English represented more than half of active users in its analyzed individual-plan population.

Among non-English languages, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic were identified as leading languages.

This growth is important for businesses developing multilingual content, customer support, and AI-assisted products. It also suggests that AI adoption is increasingly connected to local-language accessibility rather than English-only use cases.

12. ChatGPT Business Adoption Statistics

ChatGPT's adoption in the workplace has increased significantly since 2023.

Pew Research Center found that the share of employed U.S. adults who reported using ChatGPT at work increased from 8% in 2023 to 28% in 2025.

This represents a 20-percentage-point increase over two years. It indicates that ChatGPT moved beyond experimentation and became part of regular professional workflows for a growing number of workers.

13. ChatGPT Enterprise Statistics

OpenAI's 2025 State of Enterprise AI report provides additional evidence of workplace adoption.

The report stated that OpenAI served more than seven million ChatGPT workplace seats, while ChatGPT Enterprise seats had increased approximately ninefold year over year.

It also reported that weekly Enterprise messages had grown approximately eightfold since November 2024, with the average worker sending 30% more messages.

These statistics suggest that enterprise adoption is becoming deeper, not simply broader. Organizations are using AI more frequently and incorporating it into more complex workflows.

However, message volume is not a direct measure of business value. Higher usage must still be connected to outcomes such as better work quality, reduced processing time, and improved customer experiences.

14. ChatGPT Productivity Statistics

One of the most frequently discussed benefits of ChatGPT is its potential to save time.

OpenAI's 2025 enterprise research found that surveyed ChatGPT Enterprise users attributed an average of 40 to 60 minutes saved per active day to their use of AI.

Workers in data science, engineering, and communications reported higher average savings, generally between 60 and 80 minutes per day.

15. ChatGPT Education and Learning Statistics

Education has been an important use case since ChatGPT's launch.

In 2025, Pew Research Center found that 26% of U.S. adults had used ChatGPT to learn something new, compared with 8% in March 2023.

Among adults under 30, the 2025 figure was 46%.

These findings show that ChatGPT is being used for learning beyond formal classrooms. People use it to understand unfamiliar subjects, practice skills, explore technical concepts, and receive explanations.

OpenAI's July 2025 productivity note also reported that approximately 20% of U.S.-based ChatGPT messages concerned learning.

The two statistics measure different things. Pew surveyed people about whether they had ever used ChatGPT for learning, while OpenAI analyzed the share of messages associated with learning.

Sources: Pew Research Center and OpenAI Productivity Note.

16. ChatGPT Writing and Content Creation Statistics

Writing remains one of ChatGPT's most common professional applications.

The September 2025 OpenAI research identified writing as the leading work-related task within the consumer usage sample. Users relied on ChatGPT for drafting, editing, revising, summarizing, and organizing written information.

OpenAI's July 2025 productivity analysis also found that approximately 18% of U.S.-based messages involved written communication.

These findings help explain why ChatGPT has become popular among marketers, writers, students, customer support professionals, and business teams.

However, AI-generated writing still requires editorial review. Accuracy, originality, tone, and relevance depend on how the output is developed and verified.

For businesses exploring content creation and productivity applications, AI Tool Hunt provides a directory of AI tools across different use cases.

17. ChatGPT Coding and Software Development Statistics

Coding is an important use case for ChatGPT, but it represents a smaller share of general consumer conversations than writing, practical guidance, and information seeking.

The 2025 OpenAI research described computer programming as a relatively small category of overall consumer ChatGPT usage.

This does not mean AI coding tools have limited adoption. Dedicated coding products, including Codex, are measured separately from some consumer ChatGPT datasets.

In February 2026, OpenAI reported that Codex had reached approximately 1.6 million weekly users. By March 2026, the company reported more than two million weekly Codex users.

These figures indicate growing adoption of specialized AI software development workflows, although they should not be combined with ChatGPT weekly active users without accounting for overlapping users.

Sources: OpenAI, Scaling AI for Everyone and OpenAI, Accelerating the Next Phase of AI.

18. ChatGPT Image and Multimedia Statistics in 2026

ChatGPT's use has expanded beyond text.

OpenAI's August 2026 Signals research reported that multimedia-related activities accounted for 7.8% of individual ChatGPT messages globally during the analyzed period.

The research also found that multimedia represented more than one in ten messages in countries including Brazil and Colombia.

Multimedia use includes activities such as generating, analyzing, and retrieving images or other media. Its growth reflects the increasing importance of visual and multimodal AI capabilities.

The findings are especially relevant for designers, marketers, educators, and creators who use AI for tasks involving more than written responses.

Source: OpenAI, From Asking to Doing.

19. How ChatGPT Usage Changes Over Time

ChatGPT users do not necessarily maintain the same usage patterns after signing up.

OpenAI's June 2026 adoption analysis found that users in a sampled cohort sent approximately 50% more messages per day six months after joining than they did at signup.

The same analysis found that users had doubled the number of distinct capabilities they had tried over that period.

These findings suggest that people may discover additional use cases as they become more familiar with ChatGPT.

However, the analysis focused on a defined cohort and excluded some inactive accounts. It should not be interpreted as proof that every new user increases their activity by the same amount.

Source: OpenAI, How ChatGPT Adoption Has Expanded.

20. ChatGPT Market Share and Competition Statistics

ChatGPT is a major participant in the consumer AI assistant market, but market share depends on how the market is defined.

Website traffic, mobile app sessions, time spent, active users, and paid subscriptions are different measures. A platform can lead in one measure without holding the same share in another.

In March 2026, OpenAI stated that ChatGPT had approximately six times the combined monthly web visits and mobile sessions of the next-largest AI app, according to its reported comparison.

OpenAI also stated that total AI time spent on ChatGPT was approximately four times that of the next-largest AI app.

These are company-reported comparative metrics, not a complete independently audited market share percentage.

A reliable market share comparison requires a consistent reporting period, a clearly defined market, and comparable measurements for every platform.

For that reason, this article does not assign unsupported market share percentages to individual competitors.

21. ChatGPT Website Traffic Statistics

ChatGPT website traffic is frequently used to estimate its popularity, but website visits and active users are not interchangeable.

Traffic analytics platforms such as Similarweb estimate website visits, geographic traffic distribution, engagement, and referral sources.

These estimates can be useful for identifying trends, but they do not capture every interaction through mobile applications, business integrations, or APIs.

A single person may visit ChatGPT several times during a month, while another user may interact primarily through a mobile application.

For this reason, traffic data should be reported with the following details:

  • Measurement month.
  • Analytics provider.
  • Whether the metric covers desktop, mobile web, or apps.
  • Whether the figure represents visits or unique visitors.
  • Whether the number is estimated or directly reported.

A verified October 2026 traffic figure was not established from the sources reviewed, so this article does not present an unverified monthly visit count.

23. What Does ChatGPT's Growth Mean for Businesses?

ChatGPT's growth has implications for how businesses operate and how customers find information.

One important development is the increasing use of AI for research and decision support. Customers may use conversational assistants to understand products, compare services, or investigate purchase options before visiting a company website.

For businesses, this creates a reason to improve the clarity and accessibility of online information. Accurate product descriptions, useful comparisons, detailed FAQs, and trustworthy content can help both human visitors and AI-assisted research workflows.

However, ChatGPT's growing popularity does not mean that traditional search engines have become irrelevant. Businesses still need strong technical SEO, helpful content, and an effective user experience.

Implications for SEO and AI Search Visibility

The expansion of ChatGPT suggests that brands should consider both traditional search visibility and how their information appears in AI-generated answers.

Practical priorities include maintaining accurate information about products and services, publishing original research where possible, building topical authority, and making public content easy to access and understand.

Businesses should also measure their actual visibility in AI search systems instead of assuming that publishing AI-generated content will automatically increase mentions.

24. ChatGPT Trends to Watch Beyond 2026

Several developments may shape ChatGPT's next stage of adoption.

More task completion: OpenAI's 2026 research indicates that people increasingly use ChatGPT to produce outputs and complete tasks, particularly in professional settings.

Broader international adoption: Usage growth across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and other regions may create opportunities for multilingual applications and locally relevant AI services.

Greater multimodal use: Image, voice, and other media capabilities may become more important as users move beyond text-only interactions.

Deeper workplace integration: Organizations may increasingly connect AI tools to internal information and business workflows, with additional attention to security, accuracy, and accountability.

Greater emphasis on measurable outcomes: As enterprise spending grows, businesses are likely to focus more on whether AI improves productivity, customer experience, and operational performance.

These are directional interpretations of observed developments, not numerical forecasts.

Conclusion

ChatGPT's growth from its November 2022 launch to 2026 represents a major change in how people interact with artificial intelligence.

Within five days of launching, it reached one million users. By February 2026, OpenAI had reported more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million consumer subscribers. Its earlier published data also showed more than 2.5 billion messages being sent daily worldwide.

Beyond user growth, the research reveals how ChatGPT's role has evolved. People increasingly use it for practical guidance, information seeking, writing, learning, business tasks, and multimedia workflows.

For businesses, the most important takeaway is not simply that ChatGPT is popular. It is that AI assistance is becoming part of how people research information, create content, solve problems, and complete work.

As adoption continues, understanding the differences between user counts, message volumes, survey findings, and company-reported performance will be essential for interpreting ChatGPT statistics accurately.
